Munster Hockey – Week 3

There is a break in the men’s EY IHL this weekend with the EHL taking place in Banbridge Hockey Club. However high flying Cork Harlequins have their first home match on the women’s side when they host Pegasus on Saturday. Quins are 3 from 3 on their travels with 7 on their panel already off the mark this year.

In Munster men’s division 1 C of I B host Harlequins on Friday evening. Having dispatched of champions UCC last weekend C of I B look like genuine title contenders this year. Quins on the other hand pushed Bandon close but ended up losing by a single strike. Bandon Hockey Club travel toLimerick Hockey Club who will be looking to bounce back from defeat at home to Ashton Hockey Club last weekend. Ashton themselves are away again this week taking on the UCC in the Mardyke in what could be a very close encounter.

Last week was a clear indication of just how close women’s division 1 is going to be. 4 score draws in the 5 matches means all but Clonakilty Hockey Club are off the mark. They pushed Bandon close last weekend and will welcome home comforts as they host Waterford Hockey Club. Waterford held Ashton in a 2-2 draw last weekend and will hope to go one better this weekend. Ashton travel to Limerick in a tie Limerick hold the upper hand on in recent games. They were impressive last weekend and snatched a draw at the death against neighbours Catholic Institute Ladies Hockey. The last tie of the weekend sees Bandon and C of I women lock horns in Garryduff. Bandon were the sole victors last weekend coming from behind against Clon. C of I also made an impressive start to the season with a draw against UCC. Both these teams will hope to be in the mix come the end of the season and 3 points on Saturday would be a clear statement of that intent.

Dutch show class in Cork

The Irish men completed a two game series against world number 2 The Netherlands this week in the Mardyke Sports Grounds in UCC. The men were coming straight off the back of a six team tournament in Valencia, Spain. Close to 3,000 supporters turned up for the two games to see the Green Machine in action in Munster for the first time in nearly 10 years.

The Dutch showed why they are Gold Medal contenders in Rio winning both games by 5 goal margins (7-2 & 5-0). The Irish men never gave up throughout despite obvious signs of fatigue leading to a number of unforced errors.

Irish coach Craig Fulton will pick his final 16 (and 2 reserves) for Rio on the 11th of July. There are 3 Munster men in contention for places – David Harte, Conor Harte and John Jermyn. Best of luck to all three players and indeed all other players involved.

Thank you to all the volunteers that made this event such a great success. We now look forward to the Eurohockey Championships to be held in Cork. After that all eyes will be on Rio.

Liaison Officers Required for the U18 Championships

Cork is hosting the Eurohockey U18 Championships from the 24th of July to the 30th of July. This is the largest tournament Munster has ever hosted and we need help from the Munster Hockey Community to make sure it is a success.

In particular we need liaison officers who can help the travelling teams from around Europe. This is someone that can introduce themselves to the team and be the other end of the phone should they require help with anything while they are in Cork.

If you are able to help in any way please contact Mary Walsh at: walshmary901@gmail.com

Ireland to Face Netherlands in Cork

Ireland welcome the world number two, The Netherlands, to Cork next week for two friendlies in the lead up to Rio 2016. Ireland will be coming off the back of a grueling 5 game tournament in Valencia therefore almost matching the games to days ratio they are likely to have in Rio. The squad currently has 3 Munster players involved in John Jermyn, Conor Harte and David Harte. With only 18 places on the plane to Rio (2 as reserves) it is all to play for during the Cork series.

This is a once in a lifetime chance to see two of the best teams in the world go head to head in Munster. Tickets are available on the gate or from hockey.ie (€15 adults / €5 kids).
