Weekend Preview 30/11/19

In EY IHL 1 Harlequins and Catholic Institute are on the road this weekend with both hoping to take 3 points home from Dublin. Quins face a Muckross side that have been buoyed by the arrival of a number of players over the Summer. Quins have made a solid start to the year and will again be looking to their young guns to step up to the top level. Insta, still without Roisin Upton, have been faring well in their first season in IHL. They will fancy their chances of taking something away from Railway Union with both sides sitting mid-table.

On the mens side C of I host Avoca in Garryduff. They could welcome John Jermyn back from injury this weekend adding further to their firepower. Dennis Pritchard now has a panel at his disposal, something that was lacking last season. Quins are taking the transition to EY IHL 2 in their stride. The Dale brothers are providing the firepower up front this season with 17 goals between them already this season.

In the women’s Munster Senior Cup Belvedere upset the form book on Thursday dispatching of Ashton 1-0. On Saturday in form UCC travel to Limerick and will be overwhelming favourites to advance.

U23/U21 Men’s National Development Programme 2019-2020

The continued development of players after the Under 18 stage is critical if Hockey Ireland are to ensure a strong player development pathway exists and that there is a continual flow of players into the national panels. The men’s national development squad management team, led by Denis Pritchard, are tasked with ensuring that players are prepared and ready to compete on the senior team at the highest levels on the world stage – at Olympic qualifiers, World Cups and European Championships etc.

For 2020/2021 the National development programme for the Men will commence in March with three regional development/trial sessions proposed. A national development squad will be selected following the trials and it is planned that national teams will compete in matches and events as follows for 2020.

– U21 match series vs Canada (May) in Dublin

o Potential U23 development/training match not yet confirmed

– U21 tournament in Spain (June)

– U23 fixtures – end of July/August tbc (up to 6 x U23 players in each national squad)

The regional development / trial sessions being proposed will take place in three locations to allow for training and matches to be concluded within one day and avoiding the need for overnights etc.

Format

Provincial squads to attend a morning training session 1030-1230 where the national and provincial coaches will be working together with the players.

Inter-Provincial matches to take place in the afternoon sessions 1400 – 1530 / 1530 – 1800

Munster Venue / to be confirmed

– Leinster vs Ulster

– Munster vs Invitation Team

Leinster Venue / to be confirmed

– Munster vs Ulster

– Leinster vs Invitation Team

Ulster Venue / venue to be confirmed

– Leinster vs Munster

– Ulster vs Invitation Team

Players should be nominated for inclusion in the programme by end January 2020 – this will allow the national coaches to follow/observe those players in EYHL/Provincial competition prior to the regional development and selection matches

– Provinces may work off a panel of up to 21 players, of whom a maximum of 6 may be over 21 and under 23 (e.g. U23s born 1998 / 1999 and U21s born 2000 / 2001 / 2002)

o Players involved in the national U18 programme may not be included (e.g. born 2002)

o Match Teams will be limited to 18 players (subject to there being 2 x GKs)

o Each player on the panel must play for the provincial team against an opposing province at least once in the series

o The ‘Invitation team’ will include players not involved in the provincial panel that day. The team will therefore change each week and may also include players based abroad who are only available for 1 or 2 of the training sessions/match dates (also subject to provincial nomination).

Women’s National Development Programme

The national development programme for the women, led by Dave Passmore will not be participating in this programme in 2020. The women’s programme is following a similar approach as the senior women with a centralised programme. A wide panel of players attend regional strength and conditioning programmes and centralised development/pitch sessions. Club coaches are welcome to contact Dave by email (dave.irishhockey@me.com) if they have a player they believe to have developed during the season and following an evaluation of the player in competitive games, they may then be invited to attend some sessions for further assessment.

Sponsorship Survey – We need your help!!

The Munster Branch are looking to launch a new sponsorship offering in the coming weeks. This aims to help hockey to continue to grow and develop in the province. There are a few steps in doing this and we need the hockey communities help with the first – market research.

If we are to attract sponsors they need to know what makes up the hockey community – How big is the community? Where are we located? What do we do that isn’t hockey? What consumer habits have we?

This short survey is anonymous and you only have to answer what you can. So if you are a player, parent, umpire, spectator, coach or even a potential sponsor please take 5 minutes to give us the information we need to tell our sponsors who we are. We’d really appreciate a share too!!

Thank you.

Weekend Preview 23/11/19

On the women’s side Munster sides will be hoping home comforts will work to their advantage this weekend in IHL 1 and 2. After a fruitful weekend in the North last weekend Catholic Institute host Old Alex in Rosbrien. The return of Naomi Carroll has bolstered the front line with Laura Foley again firing in the goals this season. Harlequins also had a strong showing last weekend taking a point from Belfast Harlequins before losing by the narrowest of margins to last year’s champions Pegasus. Michelle and Rebecca Barry (not sisters) have stepped up as leaders this season in what is a young squad with plenty of talent. They face Pembroke Wanders in Farmers’ Cross on Saturday. In EY 2 both Munster sides have crunch ties even at this early stage of the season. C of I host Lurgan after their convincing win against NUIG in the last round of games. The evergreen Amy Roberts has been leading the line this season for CI with 5 goals already. Kay Gaffney also poses a real threat at corner time. A win would keep them second in the table and create clear divide in the table. In the Mardyke UCC host Queens University in what is likely to be a high paced game. UCC have a perfect record in Munster with their one defeat in EY 2 coming against run away group leaders Ards. UCC will be without Christina Dring but with Aoife Collins, Miah Phealan and Lauren Ryan scoring freely of late, they will pose a real threat in the final third.

In the women’s Examiner Cup Bandon will be unbackable favourites against Limerick. Katie Desmond has been in top form in the midfield with Oliva Roycroft banging in the goals up front. Waterford and Ashton meet for the second week in a row in the same venue. Ashton’s front line has been firing this year with Tracey Johnson and Emma O’Sullivan linking up well – Ciara O’Toole also poses a real threat with her drag flicking ability.

On the men’s side its the first round of the Peard Cup. The pick of the ties is between the much improved UCC against Harlequins. The Summer additions have seen UCC improve greatly this season with Simon Dring, Sam Lilburn and Evin McLure impressing. For Quins they have made a solid start to the season. Talisman Julian Dale has hit form in recent weeks with the like of Jack O’Meara and John Hobbs keeping the goals out the other end of the pitch. Bandon will be expected to have too much firepower for Catholic Institute with Fionn O’Leary currently top scorer in Munster while Waterford host C of I for the first time in close to a decade.

Munster Cup Draws

The Munster cup draws will be made this Sunday the 20th of October in Garryduff Sports Centre from 6pm. The draw will be streamed live on Facebook (pending any technical issues). People are more than welcome to attend in person.
