Sponsorship Survey – We need your help!!

The Munster Branch are looking to launch a new sponsorship offering in the coming weeks. This aims to help hockey to continue to grow and develop in the province. There are a few steps in doing this and we need the hockey communities help with the first – market research.

If we are to attract sponsors they need to know what makes up the hockey community – How big is the community? Where are we located? What do we do that isn’t hockey? What consumer habits have we?

This short survey is anonymous and you only have to answer what you can. So if you are a player, parent, umpire, spectator, coach or even a potential sponsor please take 5 minutes to give us the information we need to tell our sponsors who we are. We’d really appreciate a share too!!

Thank you.

Weekend Preview 23/11/19

On the women’s side Munster sides will be hoping home comforts will work to their advantage this weekend in IHL 1 and 2. After a fruitful weekend in the North last weekend Catholic Institute host Old Alex in Rosbrien. The return of Naomi Carroll has bolstered the front line with Laura Foley again firing in the goals this season. Harlequins also had a strong showing last weekend taking a point from Belfast Harlequins before losing by the narrowest of margins to last year’s champions Pegasus. Michelle and Rebecca Barry (not sisters) have stepped up as leaders this season in what is a young squad with plenty of talent. They face Pembroke Wanders in Farmers’ Cross on Saturday. In EY 2 both Munster sides have crunch ties even at this early stage of the season. C of I host Lurgan after their convincing win against NUIG in the last round of games. The evergreen Amy Roberts has been leading the line this season for CI with 5 goals already. Kay Gaffney also poses a real threat at corner time. A win would keep them second in the table and create clear divide in the table. In the Mardyke UCC host Queens University in what is likely to be a high paced game. UCC have a perfect record in Munster with their one defeat in EY 2 coming against run away group leaders Ards. UCC will be without Christina Dring but with Aoife Collins, Miah Phealan and Lauren Ryan scoring freely of late, they will pose a real threat in the final third.

In the women’s Examiner Cup Bandon will be unbackable favourites against Limerick. Katie Desmond has been in top form in the midfield with Oliva Roycroft banging in the goals up front. Waterford and Ashton meet for the second week in a row in the same venue. Ashton’s front line has been firing this year with Tracey Johnson and Emma O’Sullivan linking up well – Ciara O’Toole also poses a real threat with her drag flicking ability.

On the men’s side its the first round of the Peard Cup. The pick of the ties is between the much improved UCC against Harlequins. The Summer additions have seen UCC improve greatly this season with Simon Dring, Sam Lilburn and Evin McLure impressing. For Quins they have made a solid start to the season. Talisman Julian Dale has hit form in recent weeks with the like of Jack O’Meara and John Hobbs keeping the goals out the other end of the pitch. Bandon will be expected to have too much firepower for Catholic Institute with Fionn O’Leary currently top scorer in Munster while Waterford host C of I for the first time in close to a decade.

Munster Cup Draws

The Munster cup draws will be made this Sunday the 20th of October in Garryduff Sports Centre from 6pm. The draw will be streamed live on Facebook (pending any technical issues). People are more than welcome to attend in person.

Munster Women’s Sides Season Preview

Harlequins

Coach: Darren Collins

Players In: Kate Murphy (UCC)

Players Out: Ingrid Burns, Olivia Roycroft, Saoirse Griffin, Caoimhe Perdue, Jane Murphy, Julia O’Halloran

Captain/Vice: Rebecca Barry/Emma Barber

Players to watch out for: Kate Murphy

Rising Star: Leah O’Shea

Coaches Thoughts

“Transition period this year. It will be a challenging season adjusting to the loss of so many players but it’s an opportunity for younger players to establish themselves at this level.”

Captains Thoughts

“Transitionary period for the team given the numbers out this year but a lot of younger talent makes for an exciting few months to come for Quins.”

Catholic Institute

Coach: David Passmore

Assistant Coach: Ger O’Carroll

Manager: Brenda Moloney

Players In: Naomi Carroll (Cork Harlequins)

Players Out: Michelle Barrett (Umass Amherst) & Mariana Birdthistle (Lock Haven)

Captain: Christine O’Shea

Players to watch out for: With Naomi Carroll back to full fitness after her ACL operation she will be a threat up front for Insta and will no doubt be looking to impress Sean Dancer to work her way back into the senior panel. Mary Immaculate Student Roisin Begley has been in very sharp pre-season form and has some great midfield elimination and passing skills that could unlock defences. At the back, club stalwart Christine O’Shea who uses her high fitness levels to marshall the defence and join the attack.

Rising Star: Institute have a number of young players who have come through the club’s junior ranks and several from the successful Cresent Comprehensive senior team from last year. Anna Horan has shown dynamism coming forward and Leah Clery has been lively up front but the team will need all our many (7/8) young players to shine to be competitive.

Coaches Thoughts

“We have no illusions as to the challenge we are faced with this season, our first in the EYHL but I have been tremendously impressed with the attitude and desire to develop that the players have shown to date. Losing forward Kym Daly to a long term knee injury means we will struggle for squad depth and will need to keep everyone fit and healthy. We aim to make Rosbrien a tough place to come to and will need to be competitive in every game against the lower placed teams to maintain our top level status.

Captains Thoughts

“It is an honour and privilege to take on captain heading into an incredible and exciting season for us. We as a group set a goal at the beginning of last season to do everything we could on the pitch to get ourselves promoted into the EY league and compete with the best teams in the country. Heading into this season it is great to welcome back Naomi Carroll to the club and we are looking forward to having her line out along side us all in the Institute colours again. Obviously having Dave Passmore come in as head coach is massive to the development of us as a squad and the confidence has grown amongst each individual player. With Ger O Carroll and Brenda Moloney involved in the coaching and management team, we could not ask for a better set up. The squad have been working extremely hard in the last few months and we are all looking forward to the challenging games that lie ahead. There is huge potential within the squad to cause a few upsets especially when we welcome teams to Insta! We have a really good balance within the squad between the experienced, older members of the squad and the younger, more mobile players.”

C of I

Coach: Andrew Fenske (1st Season)

Players In: Steffi Bowe (Australia), Kate Burke (Ashton), Holly Lehane (UCC), Hannah Kate Finn (Bandon)

Players Out: Rebecca Kingston (UCC), Kirsty Coombes (UCD), Emily O’Hara (University of Edinburgh), Edel Coyne (Travelling), Holly Sweetnam (Work)

Captain/Vice: Hollie Moffett

Players to watch out for: Hannah Honner

Rising Star: Abi O’Mahony

Coaches Thoughts

“Our main objective is to compete well in the clubs first year in the EYHL2 & we also aim to win the Munster league. Our team has been strengthened by the arrival of Kate Burke and Holly Lehane. We also have young talent in Hannah Kate Finn, Gill O’Leary and Siri Forde who will look to break into the squad.”

UCC

Coach: Graham Catchpole

Assistant: Paidi Hartnett

Manager: Colette Coomey

S & C Coach: Patrick Ryan

Players In: Caoimhe Perdue (Cork Harlequins) Saoirse Griffin (Cork Harlequins) Rebecca Kingston (Cork C of I) Elva Kerr (Killkenny College) Lorna McCutcheon (Back from a year out) Miah Phelan Sweeney (Muckross HC)

Players Out: Molly Doran

Captain/Vice: Judy Mills (Captain) – Lauren Ryan (Vice Captain)

Players to watch out for: Jenny Clein, Saoirse O’Leary, Hannah Humphreys

Rising Star: Elva Kerr, Saoirse Griffen, Rebecca Kingston

Coaches Thoughts

“I’m looking forward to a busy season ahead with this exciting panel. The club has managed to attract some strong talent in and fortunately held on to most of its players from last season. As with any college side experience will be lacking but we will look to draw on our other strengths to overcome this. Preseason has been demanding on the girls but they have risen to the challenges presented before them. We are looking forward to getting the season started now and will take each game as it comes.”

Captains Thoughts

“Our challenge as always is to build a new team of new players at the beginning of the new season. With new talent joining us this year there is an extra expectation, but we are looking forward to getting our season started.”

Ashton

Coach: Darren Wilkinson

Players In: Kate Humphreys (CofI), Orlaith Nation (UCC), Shauna Fagan (Returning to hockey)

Players Out: Kate Harvey (Pembroke), Kate Burke (CofI), Rachel Kiernan (UCC)

Captain/Vice: Captain – Ailse Holland. Vices – Jen Levis and Emily Alice Daly.

Players to watch out for: Emma O’Sullivan and Ciara O’Toole

Rising Star: Elizabeth Tuohy

Coaches Thoughts:

“Last year’s top four finish was a step in the right direction for this team and this season we once again want to be competing at the top end of the table. This squad is full of potential and consists of a good mix of youth and experience. I’m looking forward to seeing what this group can achieve this season.”

Captains Thoughts:

“Having finished in the top 4 last season, we’ll be looking to build on this in the league and also have a good run at the Irish Hockey Trophy. Our U16’s who have come up this year, Elizabeth and Heather, will add a new flare to the back line while our stalwarts, Cliodhna and Ann will feed our attack. Darren’s familiarity with the team, having been assistant coach last year, will be vital in achieving our goals this year. “

Bandon

Coach: Ashley Smyth

Players In: Ingrid Burns, Olivia Roycroft & Stephanie Peters.

Players Out: Hannah Kate Finn

Captain/Vice: Ingrid Burns.

Players to watch out for: Jenny McLoughlin & Rachael Barry.

Rising Star: Amy Smyth

Coaches Thoughts

‘Last year was a rebuilding exercise and with a lot of hard work done at U16 level these young players are now breaking into Div 1, along with the return of experienced players this season is going to be very exciting. Having good numbers at every training is going to make match day squad selection very competitive this year.”

Captains Thoughts

“Let’s make this season a great success both as individual players to be more skilful by the end of the season and as a Team, a force to be reckoned with, whilst having fun.”

Belvedere

Coach: Eddie Kirwan

Players In: Emma O’Sullivan

Players Out: None

Captain: Aoife Barrett

Players to watch out for: Aoife Barrett

Rising Stars Mary Holmes; Aideen Coleman

Coaches Thoughts

“The aim for the season is to develop the young players coming through the youth set up whilst at the same time look at bridging the gap to the top sides. We are aiming for a top half of table finish.”

Munster Men’s Division 1 Previews

Ashton Hockey Club

Coach: Pat Healy and Phil Oakley (1st season)

Players In: John Sweetnam (Railway Union), Euan Stothers (UCC), Mark Falvey (UCC), Ethan Ball (Free agent)

Players Out: Kieran Healy (Retired), David Doherty (Travel), Gary Wilkinson, Andy Lane, David Treacy (work outside of Cork), Henry Donnelly (work commitments), James Allen (UCC)

Captain/Vice: Stuart O’Grady/Malcolm Coombes

Players to watch out for: John Sweetnam, Calvin Casey

Rising Star: Craig Byrne

A new pitch and a new look team. New coaching partnership, Phil Oakley and Pat Healy, bring a depth of hockey knowledge to a team that has seen its squad empty and re-fill over the summer. The squad exodus was mostly driven by players emigrating the city with James Allen the sole player transferring to a rival Munster team. Re-joining the Ashton cause are a trio of players – John Sweetnam, Mark Falvey and Euan Stothers who will all bring some experience and directness to the Ashton attack. With the new pitch in place this season Ashton will be hoping this season can bring some improved performances at home. A small squad will be a challenge for the players and coaches alike but within the squad there is some seasoned Division 1 players who should bring some consistency and stability to a squad in flux.

Bandon Hockey Club

Coach: Dave Buttimer (3rd Year) and Nigel Buttimer (1st Year)

Players In: Ian Hosford (Sabbatical), Rob Smith (Sabbatical) and Calum Crowley (Sabbatical)

Players Out: Rob Sweetnam (CI), Mark Collins (CI)

Captain & vice: Fionn O’Leary Captain and Ross Smyth VC

Players to watch out for: Calum Crowley, Ross Smyth and Rob Smith

Rising star(s): Karl Smyth, Iarlaith O’Neill, Ian Perrott and Ethan Hamilton Foote

Nigel Buttimer will be hoping to use experience of playing hockey at the very top level to drive the standards in Bandon this season and take them to the next level. David Buttimer also returns this season to make up a formidable coaching team that will be looking to lead Bandon back to winning ways after a relatively disappointing season last time out.

Bandon will be disappointed to lose some of their young talent as Mark Collins and Rob Sweetnam made the move to C of I to play EY IHL 2. However they had great representation on the Munster underage squads recently and no doubt this talent will be blooded throughout the season.

Captain Fionn O’Leary was clear on the targets for the year. “The main ambition this year is to get back into the IHL 2 for the following season. We believe that is where we belong. We will also be targeting a win in one of the Munster Cups/Leagues competitions.”

Catholic Institute Hockey Club

Coach: Ivan Moore (1st year)

Management team members: Dave Brosnan and John Geary.

Players In: Simon Brickenden (back from a few years abroad)

Players Out: Jannis Von Maydell (THK Rissen Germany)

Captain & vice: Cormac O’Byrne (c) & Roy Gleeson (vc)

Players to watch out for:

– Chris Ryan will be looking to assert himself in a strong front line for institute this year after a very successful season last year topped off with an u18 interpros victory. Chris will be looking to fill in the goalscoring gap left by Jannis along with vice-captain Roy Gleeson and Ger Hodkinson.

– Cian Sparling, another member of the victorious u18 interpros team will be keen do build on the huge progress made over the last few seasons which saw him being a key player for the firsts last season.

Rising star(s):

1) Jim Roulston gained a lot of invaluable experience as part of the back four last season and will no doubt be looking to secure his spot again this season which will prove to be a tough task with other young players knocking on the door for game time.

2) Cillian Archer will no doubt be looking to get as many minutes under his belt this season to build on a very successful season with the seconds last season along with Cian Nolan who is now based in Limerick which should help him assert himself as a key player for the firsts this season.

3) Stephen Healy has been a natural between the posts since coming through the ranks with huge performances throughout last season. With club stalwart Tristan Murphy around again this season competition promises to be strong.

Ivan Moore’s thoughts:

“With it being my first year in the role I am looking forward to seeing what this relatively young group of players can do this season. We have some young guys coming up from the seconds and a few older heads returning after a few year(s) so it’s exciting to see what we can do with this strong team! This year we would like to compete in the league and really cement a position in the top half of the league table. After missing out in the first round of the Irish Trophy to a strong NICS side, we are hoping to go a few steps further and hopefully put our hands on some silverware come the business end of the season. Overall we have a strong unity within the squad and we are all excited and raring to get going this weekend.”

Cormac O’Byrne’s thoughts:

“Our main ambition this year is to bring through our young players and build on the tough season we had on the pitch last year where a lot of tight matches we had weren’t reflected in the final score. Team morale is high which is helped by the successful season we had last season off the pitch with Gary O’Connor as captain. With 4 weeks of preseason complete and 3 preseason matches under our belt I know the squad is fit and ready to compete with any team in the league. From what I can gather from the players it would be a disappointing season for us not to have a piece of silverware to show for at the end of the season. “

Cork C of I Hockey Club

Coach: Denis Pritchard (2nd year as Head Coach)

Management team members: Barry Crowley and David Harvey

Players In: Eoin Finnegan (UCC), Mark Horgan (UCC), Robert Sweetnam (Bandon), Mark Collins (Bandon), Philip Sweetnam (Ashton), Andrew Fenske (S. Africa)

Players Out: Alex Burns (Pembroke), Tony Brophy (TBD) and Billy Lynch (break from hockey)

Captain & vice: Philip Byrne & Simon Wolfe

Players to watch out for: John Jermyn & Jonny Bruton

Rising star: Kevin O’Dea (Munster and Ireland U18)

Denis Pritchard’s thoughts:

“This will be an important season for the team to get back into the top tier of the Irish Hockey League. The year will be mainly focused on developing a strong team for the coming years by integrating the young talent in the team with the experience of senior players.”

Phil Byrne’s thoughts:

“The main objective is to get promoted from Irish Hockey League (IHL) Division 2 into the top National league (EYHL) for next season. The overall squad has gotten stronger with the arrival of new players and it’s important to start strong and get some confidence back in our team. We are also aiming for success in the provincial cups, league and have a good run in the Irish Sr. Cup.“

Cork Harlequins Hockey Club

Coach: Stephen Dale (2 years in role)

Management team members: Donal Holland, Manager

Players In: none

Players Out: Graham Daunt (retired)

Captain & vice: Jack O Meara capt, Ross Bailey vice captain

Players to watch out for: Jack O Meara, Julian Dale & John Whyte

Rising star(s): Ben Roberts, Andrew Dale, Michael Holland and Ross Bailey.

Stephen Dale’s thoughts:

“We are looking to be competitive in the Munster League and EYHL2. We want to play open attacking hockey and score plenty of goals.”

Jack O’Meara’s thoughts:

“We are looking to improve further on a good showing last year as we move up a level with EY IHL 2. We will be looking to test ourselves against the next level and at the same time requalify for EYHL 2 the following season.”

UCC Hockey Club

Coach: Andrew Scannell (1st Year)

Management team members: Paudi Hartnett Hockey Developement Officer, Patrick Ryan Strength and Conditioning

Players in: Sam Lilburn (Limerick), Evin Mclure (Killkenny) James Feely (Kilkenny), Garrett Sparling (Limerick), James Allen (Ashton), Simon Dring (CofI), Wouter Worms (Nijmegen HC)

Players Out: Mark Horgan (CofI), Eoin Finnegan (CofI), Sam Grace (TRRHC), Brandon Mcevoy (Queens University), Ciaran McGregor (-), Euan Stothers (Ashton).

Captain and Vices: Darren Wilkinson, Billy Mulcahy, Conor Beck

Players to watch:

Darren Wilkinson last year with the club plenty of experience.

Simon Dring on his return to hockey after a brief hiatus.

Conor Beck as our Quercus athlete for this year looking to maintain good form in front of the net.

Rising Stars:

– Sam Lilburn from limerick looking to lead from behind with a cool mind-set in the back.

– Evin McClure looking to lock down the middle of the park in his first year with the club.

Andrew Scannell’s thoughts:

“Coming back for my second stint as coach is extremely exciting, with the new players arriving to add to the quality of the players remaining from last year it should be an extremely positive season. Preseason has been good for us as a team, with so many new players it was important to get matches under our belt in order to be ready for the season ahead. We have a tough opening fixture but with the work we have done over preseason we feel we will be ready for the season to start.”

Darren Wilkinson’s thoughts:

“We are aiming to bounce back after a tough season last year. The squad has changed a lot since last year with the addition of many experienced and talented players. The cyclical nature of a college team is all too familiar to Head Coach Andrew Scannell. His understanding of college hockey and his coaching CV makes for an exciting season which we hope will be a successful one for UCC.”

Waterford Hockey Club

Coach: Senior players within the team, with Bryan Madden

Management team members: David Quinn, Brad Rouhana

Players in & where from: Teo Sitjar (Spain)

Players out & where to: Ben Johnson (Three Rock), Harry McCarthy, Ethan McInerney, David Gahan (All YMCA)

Captain & vice: Rory Isaacs- Cpt, Isaac Johnson- Vice

Players to watch out for: With the loss of a few instrumental players to Dublin an opportunity for some players to take on the responsibility of leading the team- Isaac Johnson has been building a reputation for never giving an inch. Ian Balding and Ben McInerney are 2 other players who can change the outcome of a game.

Rising star(s): Rory Treacy fresh off Ireland u16s will make an impact for WHC, with his versatility and composure. Donnagh Toomey has stepped up in the preseason games and shown he has what it takes to make an impact.

Rory Isaacs thoughts:

“This year we have a good young squad with the potential to recreate the successful league and cup campaigns we had last season, with the hope of maybe even improving in the league. It will be tough, that much is certain, but we believe that we have the depth to be able to compete with the likes of Church Of Ireland, Harlequins and Bandon for a top 4 spot once again. The growth of JAG internationals like Ian Balding, Ben McInerney and Rory Treacy, as well as the emergence of Cameron Wagenaar and Isaac Johnson, topped off with the experience of David Quinn and Irish O35 international Brad Rouhana, we feel the balance is good. I look forward to the season ahead.”

Letter to all clubs

Dear Club Secretaries!

First and foremost I realise that you may no longer be your club secretary. If this is the case then you might pass on the information in this email.

As you are no doubt aware, there are a number of vacancies yet to be filled on the Branch Management Committee.

As there were no nominees to these positions at the Annual General Meeting on May 1st and none received since then, you are reminded that all Munster Branch activity will cease after 1st June 2019 unless the situation changes.

We very much regret that we find ourselves in this situation but I’m sure you can appreciate that we cannot be expected to function going forward without a Management Committee Chairperson, Munster Vice-President, Chairperson of the Competitions’ Committee and Chairperson of the Coaching and Development Committee. The job descriptions for these positions are on the Munster Branch web-site.

We propose to hold a meeting of last season’s Management Committee on Tuesday 28th. May to address the situation. We are sincerely hoping that our clubs will endeavour in the meantime to appreciate the seriousness of where we are at, and nominate candidates for these vacant positions.

With kind regards!

Sally Kavanagh. Hon. Sec. MBHI
