Colours Blitz

The inaugural Colours Blitz for Boys & Girls (U9 & U11) was held on Saturday 20th September at Ashton HC. Hockey Ireland and Munster Hockey hosted this great initiative. Suitable for clubs with just 2 players or as many as 20, everyone was warmly welcomed and catered for. The focus of the event was not on competition, but on fun, socialising, and creating a love for the sport among all participants.

The format of the event was non-competitive, with small sided games of 3v3 and 5v5 taking centre stage. This approach ensured that the games remained fast-paced, inclusive, and exciting for every player, regardless of skill level. Importantly, it allowed players from hockey-playing schools with low numbers to experience the thrill of playing as part of a team or in a fun blitz environment. By offering individual sign-up, we created a level playing field where players were allocated to teams or colours, making new friends and fostering a true sense of community.

One of the standout aspects of the day was the contribution of our Youth Leaders and Umpires. Impeccably dressed and easily identifiable, these young role models worked tirelessly on the pitch, interacting with, teaching, and encouraging all of the young players. Their enthusiasm and dedication were evident in every game, and their ability to inspire younger participants was truly heartening to witness. As the future of hockey, we hope these young coaches and umpires continue their journey in the sport—they are a credit to their parents, schools, and clubs.

Of course, an event like this doesn’t come together without careful planning and support. A special note of thanks is due to Lisa Buttimer of Ashton HC, whose organisational skills ensured the smooth running of the event on the day. Lisa’s behind-the-scenes efforts made it possible for everyone to simply enjoy the experience, knowing that every detail was taken care of.
In summary, the day was a resounding success, filled with laughter, learning, and a genuine love for hockey.

Well done to all involved—players, leaders, umpires, and organisers. Events like these remind us why we love the sport and how important community is to its continued growth and success.
