Catholic Institute’s women have been perennial title contenders in recent seasons, but such is the competitiveness of the EY Irish Hockey League Division 1 that even a slight dip in form can spell trouble.
On Saturday, they travelled to Old Alex where goals from Aoibheann Collins and Morgan Gallagher weren’t enough to secure a result, falling to a 3–2 defeat. However, they bounced back impressively on Sunday, producing one of the weekend’s standout results by upsetting second-placed Railway Union. A second-half strike from Anna Campbell earned Institute a vital 1–0 win.
Despite remaining bottom of the table, the Limerick side have now closed the gap on ninth-placed Ulster Elks to just two points. At the top end, Loreto continue to set the pace — their eighth consecutive victory giving them a six-point cushion and a game in hand.
It was a weekend to forget for Cork Church of Ireland’s men, who came away empty-handed from their two fixtures.
On Saturday, they hosted Corinthians in Garryduff and looked set for a share of the points after goals from Harry Jackson and Leandro Dos Santos Carvalho levelled the tie at 2–2. However, a late Corinthians strike condemned them to a 3–2 defeat.
Sunday brought more disappointment as Monkstown proved too strong, with Irish international Lee Cole netting twice in a 3–1 loss. The results leave C of I ninth in the table, three points adrift of Avoca in eighth. Banbridge continue to lead the way, three clear of nearest rivals Lisnagarvey.
In the Men’s Munster Division 1, Cork Harlequins extended their perfect record in emphatic fashion, dismantling C of I B by 9–0. Catholic Institute kept pace with the leaders thanks to a 2–0 victory over Harlequins B, while Bandon stayed in touch with a comfortable 5–1 win over Midleton.
The women’s top division in Munster is shaping up to be a three-horse race. UCC maintained their flawless start with a 6–0 victory over Bandon to stay three points clear at the summit. Crescent College kept up the pressure with a hard-fought 3–2 win against C of I, while Harlequins completed their business earlier in the week — easing past Ashton 6–0 in wet conditions at Farmers’ Cross on Thursday night.
