Aerial Rule Update – Now in Effect

Munster Hockey confirms that a new aerial rule is now in effect across all competitions, in line with Hockey Ireland. This change follows a recent update to the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Rules of Hockey and applies with immediate effect.

The revised rule is designed to enhance player safety and provide greater clarity around the use of aerial balls. It states:

“Players must not approach within 5 metres of an opponent receiving a falling raised ball until it has been touched by the receiver. The ball may be intercepted within 5 metres, but outside playing distance, provided this is done safely. The initial receiver has the right to the ball. If it is not clear which player is the initial receiver, the player from the team that raised the ball must allow the opponent to receive it.”

Live Webinar
