In our new Spotlight section, meet the MBHI Board of Directors, we introduce Nicky Stokes, MBHI President.
Here, Nicky gives us an insight into her hockey background
Hockey has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I first picked up a stick in the playgrounds of Ursuline Convent, Blackrock, where I learned the fundamentals of the game that would shape much of my journey. My early encounters with hockey laid the groundwork for a lifelong passion, setting me on a path that would span continents and communities.
After those formative years, I took my love for the game overseas to Australia, joining Ascot HC in Brisbane for a memorable season. The adventure continued with three seasons at Ealing HC in London, each adding new perspectives and friendships.
In 1990, work brought me back to West Cork, where I joined Bandon HC for a year and helped the team progress from Junior to Senior level, representing Munster in the prestigious White Cup.
Returning to Douglas marked another turning point, as I continued my hockey journey with Cork Church of Ireland following the closure of Old Ursuline HC. Over the years, I have worn many hats—player, coach, manager, Club Captain, and umpire.
One of my proudest achievements has been co-founding the Mini Hockey Blitzes (with Mary Walsh), which have blossomed into a vibrant, inclusive introduction to the sport for young players across the region.
Each role I’ve taken on has deepened my love for hockey and strengthened my belief in its incredible power to unite people. These experiences have shown me that hockey is more than just a sport—it’s a community built on shared commitment and joy.
Now, as President of the Munster Branch of Hockey Ireland (MBHI), I am dedicated to supporting the growth of hockey across the province—from grassroots initiatives to high performance—while always honouring the community spirit that makes our sport truly special.
